August Monthly Meeting

Exoplanets and biosignatures - including the latest on the K2-18b kerfuffle.

Dr. Matthew Bothwell

Matt’s (our Honorary President) talk will be on Exoplanets and biosignatures and will also cover the latest on the K2-18b kerfuffle.

Matt as well as being our Honorary President is also head of outreach for the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge and his talks are always ones not to miss.

Biosignatures are molecules or patterns in a planet’s atmosphere, surface, or environment that could indicate the presence of life. Key atmospheric biosignatures include oxygen (O₂) and ozone (O₃) produced by photosynthesis, methane (CH₄) in disequilibrium with O₂, nitrous oxide (N₂O), and sulfur gases like dimethyl sulfide (DMS).

Matt’s talk will look at the detection of these signatures and the discussion that Cambridge University researchers initiated with respect to the JWST data on exoplanet K2-18 b.

£2 for Members and £3 for Guests.

This meeting will be held at Standalone Farm and will also be available over Zoom to Members. Please purchase your tickets in advance via MemberMojo to receive the Zoom link.

Guests can attend two physical meetings in the year before having to pay membership.
