LDAS Monthly Meeting – Water in the Universe

27 September 2023 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Water is one of the most important substances in the universe, and its importance cannot be overstated. It is essential for life as we know it, and it is also a crucial component of many natural processes and phenomena.  Water is a key player in the formation of stars and planets.  As a vapor it is present in the interstellar medium between stars where it condenses into clouds that eventually form new stars and planets.

Prof. Jonathan Tennyson will give tonights talk. He is Massey Professor of Physics, Department of Physics and Astronomy and a Feellow of the Royal Society.

He was an undergraduate at King’s College, Cambridge where he gained a BA in Natural Sciences (part II Chemistry) in 1977. Between 1977 and 1980 he took a PhD in Theoretical Chemistry (electronic structure calculations) under John Murrell at the University of Sussex. He spent a productive two years (1980-82) as Royal Society Western European Exchange Fellow at the University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands, In 1982 he joined the Theory Group at Daresbury Laboratory and was eventually (1985) taken on the permanent staff. Luckily in the same year he managed to escape to University College London as a `Blood Lecturer’ in Theoretical Atomic Physics. At UCL he not only found that he had become a physicist but  also discovered astronomy. He was promoted to Reader in 1991 and led the Atomic, Molecular, Optical and Positron research group from 1991-2004. He became Professor of Physics in 1994. He took was Head of Department 2004-11 and became Massey Professor of Physics in 2005. He is currently running an ERC funded project ExoMol: Molecular line lists for exoplanet and other atmospheres. He is also Chair of the European Task Force of Laboratory Astrophysics and a IUPAC task group on the spectroscopy of water.
