International Sun Day – event postponed
21 June 2020 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
FreeWe have decided to postpone the event proposed for June 21. The forecast for Sunday morning is for mostly cloud which isn’t very helpful! Additionally, the sun is very quiet so there isn’t much to see. We will attempt another go at this in the coming weeks when we get a good forecast. Hopefully, there may be a sunspot to see. Please monitor this website to keep up to date with our plans.
There was a sunspot last week, here is an image of it:
A solar telescope filters the sun light so we only see a very specific wavelength of light which is emitted by hydrogen in the sun. The wavelength is 656 nm. As we are only viewing this one wavelength of light the most detailed images are taken with monochrome (black and white) cameras. A colour camera can be used as well. We hope to use both types of camera on the day. Here is a picture of the sun from 2015.
