THE SOLAR SYSTEM

The SUN: The Sun is by far the largest object in the solar system. It contains more than 99.8% of the total mass of the Solar System. Must ONLY be observed directly with specialist equipment.

The MOON: The Moon is the Earth’s closest neighbour in space, and is our planet’s only natural satellite. Can be observed with or without equipment.

Meteors: One astronomical activity that anyone can take part in is watching meteors. You don’t need any equipment other than your eyes – in fact telescopes and even binoculars may be useless because they will cover too small an area of the sky, and meteors move fast!
