This was a sell out event with Patrick Moore held at the comfortable Campus Theatre Welwyn Garden City on the evening of November the 9th. Dealing with the Sun the Moon and each Planet individually Patrick in his own inimitable style enthralled the audience as only he can. Ages of those present ranged from 8 to 80 all were captivated with planetary details of atmospheres, core temperatures and day length. The supporting slide show on the cinema-sized screen was equally impressive with both historical drawings and up to date probe shots of our neighbouring worlds. Patrick punctuates his delivery with quips and anecdotes to keep it light; this does not detract from its scientific validity. The talk on the Solar System lasted for just over an hour a brief 20 minute break was followed by a 40 minute question and answer session, Patrick at his tender age did not miss a beat answering the many questions in clear detail before the question was even completed. A number of times during the evening I sat wondering just what was the most fascinating, the man or the subject matter? If you ever get a chance to go and see him do, this treasure can unfortunately not last forever.
