Letchworth & District Astronomical Society
Astronomy Presentations

The society chairman, Jerry Stone, is a freelance presenter on astronomy and space exploration, and gives presentations all over the UK.

He has a range of highly visual talks on various aspects of astronomy and space, and although they can go into detail they do not assume any prior knowledge of the subject, and so they are suitable for non-specialist audiences such as schools, scouts and guides, and the general public, as well as for astronomical societies and other technical groups.

Topics include:

  •  Starry, Starry, Night - An introduction to astronomy
  •  Life in the Universe - Including the Contact Challenge: Can you decode a space message?
  •  We're All Going To Die! - The threat of Near-Earth Objects
  •  The Total Eclipse - The Total Experience - What it was like to stand in the shadow of the Moon
  •  Views of the Moon - Our nearest neighbour in space

He also presents workshops for schools on astronomy and space. They are multi-activitiy sessions suitable for both primary and secondary level and are very cross-curricular. They include pacing out the solar system with a set of inflatable planets, making and launching rockets, building a model of the International Space Station and much more.

Charges for the workshops can be on a flat-fee basis or on a cost per pupil. This include all materials. A travel charge applies for distances over 25 miles.

Additional discounts are available - ask for details.

Evening presentations on space and astronomy can be provided free of charge if an organisation arranges for a workshop on the same day at a local school.

Jerry is also an international author. His highly acclaimed book - "One Small Step" - tells the story of how the Apollo astronauts reached the Moon.

His presentation at the Edinburgh Festival was described as "Awesome"!
