Perseid Meteor Shower

This week see the peak activity of the Perseid meteor shower, the night of August 12/13, though you can see meteors for several days either side of the peak days. The meteors are caused by the Earth passing through the debris stream of Comet Swift/Tuttle and when bits of debris hit the Earth's atmosphere they burn up. Summer Sunshine Event – Solar viewing

LDAS will be at Standalone Farm with a variety of telescopes for safely viewing the sun. Even if it isn't sunny we can show you photographs and video of the sun, you might be surprised at what goes on on the solar surface. Please note that to see the sun through a telescope needs special telescopes, if you use an ordinary telescope you run a real risk of serious damage to your eyes. The event is free of charge.

Summer Sunshine Event – Solar viewing

LDAS will be a Standalone Farm for the second solar viewing event during August. We will have telescopes specially designed for viewing the sun with safety. If you have a telescope at home do not use it for viewing the sun unless you are certain it is designed for solar viewing. The event is free.

Gravity Waves - LISA and the LISA Pathfinder Mission, by Dr Christian Trinkel. The recent confirmation of the existence of gravity waves is a stunning scientific achievement and another confirmation of Einstein's theories. Tonight we will have three talks by members of the society, each lasting 20-30 minutes. There will be a break with refreshments provided. Piero Cocevar - "Experiences from and imaging the USA Solar Eclipse" Norman Gray -"The South African Large Telescope (SALT) at Sutherland in the Karoo Desert. It is the largest telescope in Africa and is  composed of primary mirror array 11 metres across".
