Eclipses and meteors!

There are 3 major astronomical events during August, and you are invited to join us.
See here for more information.

Image of the Month

This month's image is a view of the beautiful M57 - the Ring Nebula in Lyra.

This was taken by Ian Dunbar with a 5" reflector on an EQ2 mount, using an SPC900NC webcam that he modified. It's a stack of 31 x 15 second exposures.

If you'd like to submit an image, then contact us.

Whatever the level of your interest in astronomy, welcome to Letchworth & District Astronomical Society.

The LDAS is based in Letchworth, Hertfordshire, UK.  We are a medium sized and friendly society, holding regular meetings, star parties and public events for members and the public alike. Additionally we are more than happy to present talks to other clubs, schools and other organisations in the area.

We meet from 7:30 on the last Wednesday of each month at Plinston Hall in the centre of Letchworth, and we have an observatory (Lat 51o59'24" N, Long 0o14'34" W) to the north of Letchworth at the Standalone Farm Centre, where we hold observing sessions.   Plinston Hall is the large building on the left-hand side of the northern end of the Broadway. In December our meeting is in the middle of the month, when we have our AGM and Quiz evening.

In the following pages we hope you will find all the information about us that you need. 2005 was our 20th anniversary and we had a number of special activities, such as our anniversary Star-B-Que, which has become an annual event.

You can find details of our meeting schedule for 2008.  Last March we invited the public to join us for the total eclipse of the Moon, and we did the same for the Perseid meteor shower in August.   We will be holding more public events in 2008 and we invite everyone to join us in our activities. 2009 has been designated the International Year of Astronomy, so this is an ideal time to further your interest in this fascinating subject.

Please look through these pages, and if you need any additional details, do not hesitate to contact me.

If you are interested in a presentation on astronomy or space exploration for your school, scout or guide group, Rotary Club or any other organisation, then contact me by writing to chair-at-ldas.org.uk. (Replace "-at-" by "@" in the address.)

Jerry Stone, Society Chairman.
