PUBLIC STAR PARTY

Our May Public Star Party

On the evening of Saturday 10 May, we held a Public Star Party at the observatory at the Standalone Farm Centre.

The main attraction was the Moon. The Society’s star parties are usually timed around the New Moon, so that its glare does not drown out other sights in the sky. This time the intention was to let visitors see the Moon itself. An array of telescopes provided by society members allowed close-up views of the craters on the lunar surface. Visitors were also able to see the beautiful rings of Saturn to add to the experience.

One of the advantages of our site at Standalone is that we have the use of two of the barns. One was used for refreshments and book sales. In the other, Society chairman Jerry Stone gaving a highly illustrated talk about the solar system, including an explanation of why we only have 3 planets!
In addition, Simon Bennett from the Widescreen Centre had a range of telescopes on display, and gave some excellent advice for anyone looking to buy a telescope.

Here are some photos from the event. You can see a photo of the Moontaken on the night on the home page.

Here are a couple of photos showing visitors lining up to use some 'scopes at a previous event.

We will be having other public events during the year - see our events listing. If you would like to bring a group to any LDAS public event, please contact us.
